How should a centrifugal compressor be selected?

How should a centrifugal compressor be selected? The principle at its core is "let the operating conditions define the parameters, then let the parameters define the model". Begin by using five dimensions, namely gas medium, inlet and discharge pressure, flow rate, inlet temperature and specific power,Then check the unit's efficiency and surge margin against its performance curves. Finally, make the purchasing decision on the basis of life cycle cost. Any selection that ignores the actual air-demand profile will turn an expensive machine into a long-term "power hog".

  I. Core parameters that must be fixed before selection

A centrifugal compressor is a dynamic machine: the impeller converts mechanical energy into the kinetic energy of the gas, which the diffuser then converts into pressure energy. Its pressure characteristic is strongly coupled with flow rate and rotational speed, so its logic differs fundamentally from the "positive-displacement delivery" of a screw compressor. This working principle dictates that selection must start from the following parameters: gas medium, inlet pressure, discharge capacity, inlet temperature and specific power.

Centrifugal compressors perform excellently at high flow rates but are limited at low flow. When the inlet volumetric flow falls below the threshold of a centrifugal machine, a reciprocating or screw compressor should be chosen instead.

II. The five-step method of centrifugal compressor selection

  1. Define the process envelope. Confirm whether oil-free operation (Class 0) is required, whether the per-unit discharge capacity is ≥ 20 m3/min, and whether operation is continuous. If two or more of these three conditions are met, the centrifugal route is essentially settled.

  2. Calculate the operating parameters. Use the flow/power method described above to establish the design point, and define the maximum, normal and minimum flow ranges so that margin can be reserved for surge control.

  3. Match the machine configuration.Choose a single-stage machine where the pressure ratio is moderate and compactness is required; choose a multistage machine with interstage cooling for high pressure ratios and large temperature differences; an integrally geared multi-shaft design allows each stage's impeller to run independently at its own optimum speed, giving higher overall efficiency than a single-shaft machine.

  4. Check the performance curve and surge margin. The pressure and flow figures on the nameplate correspond to the most efficient operating point, and economics fall away sharply once operation deviates from it. Always request the complete performance curve and efficiency island map, and confirm that the surge line leaves at least a 10% flow margin from the normal operating point.

  5. LCC.Add up the initial purchase price, electricity, maintenance labour, spare parts and the cost of unplanned downtime, and compare the options on that basis.

III. Turbo-Tech and its centrifugal compressor range

Once the operating parameters have been calculated, if the duty combines high flow, continuous full load and oil-free operation, the local delivery advantages of a high-end centrifugal compressor made in China deserve a place on the shortlist. Turbo-Tech Compressor  Wuxi Co., Ltd. is a  enterprise dedicated to multi-shaft, multistage integrally geared centrifugal compressors. It independently masters the full core technology set, including three-dimensional flow impeller aerodynamics, multi-shaft gearboxes and high-speed shaft systems, and can build units of up to five shafts and ten stages. Its products are exported to North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other markets worldwide.

Turbo-Tech's core product matrix spans everything from small and medium flows to very large projects:

Ti series centrifugal air compressors: flow 1,200–24,000 Nm3/h, pressure 0.06–1.6 MPa(G), media: air and nitrogen. Designed for small and medium-flow oil-free clean air supply in electronics, food, pharmaceuticals, textiles and similar industries.

Mn(H) series centrifugal compressors: flow 1,200–600,000 Nm3/h, pressure 0.12–16.0 MPa(G), unit power up to 60 MW. The workhorse for large air separation plants, petrochemical plants, compressed air energy storage and wind tunnel testing.

Ra series process gas compressors: flow 1,200–600,000 Nm3/h, pressure 0.25–40.0 MPa(G), designed strictly to API standards and able to compress complex process media such as natural gas, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, chlorine and olefins, with sealing arrangements and impeller materials customised to the properties of the medium.
